Il cambiamento climatico riguarda sia il riscaldamento globale causato dalle emissioni umane di gas serra, sia i conseguenti cambiamenti su larga scala nei modelli meteorologici. Sebbene ci siano stati periodi precedenti di cambiamenti climatici, dalla metà del 20° secolo gli esseri umani hanno avuto un impatto senza precedenti sul sistema climatico della Terra e hanno causato cambiamenti su scala globale.

La causa umana del cambiamento climatico non è contestata da nessun organismo scientifico di levatura nazionale o internazionale. L’aumento della temperatura è accelerato o temperato dai feedback climatici, come la perdita di neve e ghiaccio che riflettono la luce solare, l’aumento del vapore acqueo (un gas serra stesso) e le modifiche ai sink biosferici terrestri e oceanici.
